THE PERSON BEHIND RADIO WORKBENCH

Radio first.
Software with purpose.

I’m Leslie McCarthy, EI5GJB. First licensed in 2007, I’m an amateur radio operator in East Cork, Ireland, and a software developer.

I enjoy a mix of modern and classic equipment. There is a particular satisfaction in making a contact with older gear, and I’m just as happy operating the latest rigs. Whatever the conditions, I try to get on the air whenever I can.

RADIO & SOFTWARE

Built from the needs of my own station.

Alongside operating on the bands, I enjoy writing software for the amateur radio community and making it available to other operators. Several of my projects began as a way to solve a need at my own station, then grew into tools that other hams could use too.

TS-890S Desktop is one of those projects. It brings radio control and station tools together on a computer, with detailed guides here to help operators understand the screens, connections and remote setup.

I have an honours degree in Computer Science, specialising in Software Development, from Munster Technological University (MTU) in Cork. That education supports the hands-on approach behind my projects: useful software should solve a real problem and be clear to set up and operate.

SOFTWARE PROJECTS

Ideas from the station.
Shared with the community.

These projects grew from interests and practical needs at my own station, then were developed and released for other radio amateurs.

EI5GJB Weather Station

A weather station on the East Cork coast, polled locally over the LAN rather than through a manufacturer’s cloud. Its custom real-time dashboard brings together Met Éireann warnings, Ballycotton tides and sea state, Irish weather buoy data and a live map of who is hearing the station on FT8.

The station keeps recording through an internet outage, retains reception history beyond PSK Reporter’s 24-hour window and compares forecast scores with measured conditions.
